What Does Ayurveda Say About Drinking Coffee?

Sep 13, 2021

I bet many of us are savoring the thought of that first sip of coffee in the morning! But if you are an avid coffee drinker and have taken up some Ayurvedic practices, this article is sure worth a read! For those engaged in the Ayurvedic lifestyle practice, you know how the doshas work, when, and how to eat or meditate—right? Did you ever stop to think what exactly is Ayurveda’s views on drinking coffee? Well, before you get too worried you might have to ditch your daily cup of Joe, let me tell you that’s not the case.

Ayurveda & Coffee

Ayurveda actually has a neutral stance on coffee. Let me get into further detail on why this is. If you are familiar with Ayurveda’s protocols around diet it is usually center on how certain foods make you feel externally and internally.

The Doshas & Coffee Consumption

Mostly, around the energy it brings you, the taste, and how you react to such consumption during one of the doshas. Concluding my research I have actually found that there is such thing as a “coffee gene.” Yes, I said it coffee gene and it most certainly has importance to whether or not coffee drinking is right for you according to Ayurveda.

What is the "Coffee Gene?"

Well, according to this gene if your reaction to coffee is bad then it’s harder for you to consume. As for others who only experience a positive association with coffee drinking consumption is easier. For example, if you are feeling on edge or anxious, have stomach aggravation, difficulty getting to bed then I would say you don’t metabolism coffee as easily.

On the other hand, try having your daily cup after a meal to ensure that you don’t suffer from any of those negative connotations in regard to coffee consumption. If coffee is consumed there after a meal it is perfectly fine as this will give you the exact boost you need without any of the ugly side effects.

Ayurveda also suggests if drinking coffee is like second nature to you and you don’t necessarily associate have negative emotions/ feelings toward it then it is easily metabolized for you.

Vata, Pitta, Kapha, & Coffee

Essentially, casual coffee drinkers who associate themselves with the Vata and Pitta dosha usually have an easier time with caffeine. But let me tell you there are some cons to this. For one, vata enhances coffee consumption and with that being said you can experience much anxiety, irritability, and trouble digesting food properly.

Coffee also induces an excess of Pitta. Naturally, this causes some irregularities such as heart palpitation and high blood pressure! In which, if that is the case for you I would suggest taking a break from coffee for a while. Folks who experience a higher Kapha respond to coffee well! As it can aid in promoting a better mood and bowel movement.

How Ayurveda Suggests to Drink Coffee

Now let me get into some ways to incorporate drinking coffee that don’t offset negative symptoms. Try adding spice to your cups such as cinnamon or ginger. Also, try giving into some bulletproof coffee options. I know if you are some sort of a coffee connoisseur then you have definitely heard of bulletproof coffee. Adding in some ghee or even coconut oil helps with digestion and so much more!

I hope this article had given you some sort of insight or clarity on drinking your regular cup of Joe while practicing Ayurveda. Thank you all for listening and know you can all sip on your happy, healthy cups of coffee knowing you are fully informed on how to drink it in a way that’s beneficial to you and your body!
